I Am Not a Conceptual Artist (a statement of intent)
June 8, 2010
I am not a conceptual artist. My work is not, ultimately about concepts. If it seems to be so, then I have failed.
I am an aestheticist, or perhaps an aesthetician (but certainly not an aesthete). What interest me are sensations (I include here mental sensations). When my work does invoke a concept, it is to explore the sensation of the concept. The concept itself is a means to an end- substance put at the service of surface.
If this makes my work fundamentally shallow, very well. I do however strive for a novel and rigorous shallowness.
